When a breaking news event occurs that requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, before 24-hour news networks existed, regularly scheduled daily network newscasts), a broadcaster will alert its affiliates to stand by and then, typically with a countdown sequence, begin its breaking news coverage. This is sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” Breaking news coverage may also include station imaging, lower thirds and other graphics designed to convey the urgency of the event. Until recently, breaking news updates were only used for severe weather events or nationally significant political developments such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
