Trending is a breaking news story that is currently being discussed, tweeted about, or searched on Google. Typically, a national network will alert its affiliates to the story and request that they interrupt regular non-news programming for coverage. A special graphic is often used, accompanied by an audio cue and countdown sequence. In the past, such breaks were reserved for the most urgent stories, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, but now they are common on 24-hour news channels, where there is a live anchor available for interruption at any time. In other cases, the breaking news is covered through cut-ins during regular programming or a ticker that is added to the lower third.
