Trending is a term used by television and radio networks to refer to breaking news stories that are of sufficient importance to interrupt current non-news programming or, in the case of a 24-hour news network, regularly scheduled programing. Depending on the nature of the event, it may only be necessary to interrupt regular commercial advertising, or it may take days for a network to complete an in-depth report on a story. When breaking news happens, the broadcaster will usually alert its affiliates to expect a break in the regular schedule and will often provide a countdown sequence that allows the network’s feed to be switched over. Various graphics, such as lower thirds and special tickers, are used to convey the urgency of the breaking news. See also Newsflash and Special report.
