Breaking News
When an event occurs that elicits nationwide coverage and requires numerous stations to interrupt their normal programming, it’s called breaking news. In the past, this was usually limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or major natural disasters, but 24-hour news channels have become accustomed to interrupting regular programming for even the smallest of developments. When this occurs, the network will usually alert its affiliates to “stand by” for an interruption and then begin broadcasting a special report. Depending on the situation, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
