Trending is a special report on news stories that are currently being discussed by the media and public. These can be political or social.
In television broadcasting, breaking news is when a current story interrupts regular programming to cover an event that is of significant interest to the audience. The break in regular programing may last only a few seconds, or it could continue for several hours or even days. During this time, the network often integrates analysis about the breaking story through analysts in-studio, via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or through other sources. If the breaking story is particularly important, it can be interrupted during regular commercial advertising breaks.
In North America, until the 1990s, most stations only used break-ins with severe weather, such as a tornado warning or landfalling hurricane. Other breaking news events were usually covered by a cut-in or alert crawl during regularly scheduled programming. In recent years, many networks have begun to use a Special Report ticker graphic with a distinctive music cue to cover breaking news stories during non-news programming, lessening the need for the traditional break in newscasts or other programs.
