For decades, television news has lived on cable. Cable TV was linear and broadcast news was localized. The town crier bellowed the news as he walked the village. But his reach was limited by time and news sources.

Streaming news has changed the game for both the consumer and the news provider. With streaming news, the delivery is tailored to the viewer’s preference.

Today, the major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in news streaming. The majors schedule regular nightly news programs and offer reruns and documentaries. They also offer news analysis.

Several major streams, such as CBS News, Fox, and NBC, produce ten hours of programming per day. Most of their audiences are under 45. Unlike cable, these streams do not have to deal with costly negotiations with cable companies.

While the majors have high hopes for streaming, they are avoiding over-hyping it. Some observers fear a multiplicity of new choices could feed polarization. And a commercial-averse audience may not pay for TV news.

One of the best examples of the benefits of streaming news is the ability to watch a story wherever you are. For example, the CBS News network picked up coverage of a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh after a bridge collapsed.

Another example is SciTechDaily, which covers astronomy and cosmology. This includes the Gravitational Waves, as well as other science news.

Lastly, free news streamers are trying to convince viewers that they can cut the cord. In exchange, they want to earn a portion of the revenue that the majors earn from their subscribers.
