Breaking news is a type of television or radio news reporting that requires a sudden interruption of current non-news programming to cover an event of national significance. When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a network will alert its affiliates to the situation and then will begin broadcasting a countdown sequence over its regular feed to allow those stations to switch over to the network.
