Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio program that covers an event that warrants immediate, national coverage and requires the interruption of regular non-news programming. Traditionally, cut-ins from networks and local stations were used for breaking news events such as severe weather or land-falling hurricanes. These segments were commonly referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Since the advent of 24-hour news channels, the practice of interrupting regular programming for breaking news has been reduced; many now use a ticker graphic that is activated during regularly scheduled programs and may include distinctive music cues. For nationally significant breaking news stories, a countdown to the network feed will usually be displayed on all affiliates, as well.
