When a news event occurs that is so important, or warrants immediate coverage, a broadcaster may interrupt non-news programming, including regularly scheduled newscasts. This is called breaking news, or newsflash (or special report) when an event warrants nationwide coverage and requiring many stations to stop their normal programs. Typically, the national network feed will first pause briefly, and then switch to a countdown sequence, to allow local affiliates to join the network feed. This countdown is usually accompanied by an audio cue and a graphic. This is commonly done for serious events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a natural disaster.
