Current News is a type of news program that involves coverage of breaking and timely stories. These programs may be broadcast on television or radio.
Breaking news – the most obvious use of the term is to refer to news reports that interrupt existing programs in order to report on a significant and potentially urgent event, such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack. The term is also used to refer to a more general form of reporting that is intended to be informative in nature.
Special report – another common use of the term is to describe a news report that combines a live shot of a reporter with footage of the news event being reported on. This is done in order to provide a more comprehensive and immersive experience for the viewer than might be possible with a live report alone.
In the case of breaking news coverage on network television, these reports are typically shown in a short, concise format and are often followed by a cut-in of an anchor. This is akin to a televised news conference, in which the network’s main anchor (often the same one as the network’s evening or morning newscast) presents the latest breaking details from an incident.
A breaking news story is usually accompanied by the newest technology in broadcasting, such as an alert crawl or reverse countdown to allow affiliates to join in on the action, and is frequently capped off with a dazzling graphics sequence. These can be as simple as a graphic featuring a pulsing score or as complex as the integration of real-time weather information from satellite and radar into a broadcaster’s existing programming lineup.
