There are two main types of news: trending and breaking. Trending news is based on web page hits and is reader focused. Breaking news, which is referred to as breaking news, is a live story of immediate interest to the audience. Breaking news is sometimes used instead of “breaking” news because it is redundant when referring to any and all news. But whether the story is breaking or not is another question. Here are some things to consider when interpreting breaking news.

First, you’ll notice that current news tends to have a longer lead time than breaking news. A network or a local station may show live coverage of breaking events, and cut away to show a video of the story. In rare cases, the network or station will pass the story to a reporter based at the scene of the event. They may then share more details of the event as they break. When this happens, current news may end abruptly and the anchor may need to go back to his or her live shot.

Breaking news can interrupt prime time programming, which can disrupt new or highly rated programming. Local affiliates can alert viewers to upcoming pre-emptions by using special topical graphics. Then, these events can be viewed by millions of viewers, resulting in increased audience loyalty and viewer satisfaction. When breaking news happens during prime time, it may interrupt an episode of a hit show. In April 2017, ABC interrupted a Scandal episode because of the Shayrat missile strike.
