Trending is a term used by some television and radio networks to designate stories which are generating substantial interest in the media or public at large. When a story is deemed as trending, it may be featured in the newscast, on the network website, or both. Historically, breaking news events such as natural disasters or severe weather would require station cuts-ins to interrupt regular programming, though the advent of 24-hour news networks now allows breaking stories to be followed live without interruption. If a network is interrupting programming, they will often call all affiliates to stand by and announce that they are switching to a Special Report.
