TV news has been broadcast on the airwaves for decades. It was even a profitable business. But a newer, streaming medium is reshaping how we watch the news.
Streaming allows us to choose the content we watch. We can share it on social media or get custom notifications if our news is trending. Streaming also offers the ability to archive the news.
For example, Fox Nation, a streaming service from the Fox News Channel, is attracting 1.5 million subscribers. That’s a lot of people. Previously, if you wanted to watch news, you had to have a cable subscription. And the fee was $20 a year.
Several major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They offer regular nightly news programs, documentaries and news analysis. Plus, they offer reruns.
The big question is how these companies will compete with the dozens of free services vying for our attention. Here’s some advice from academic marketing experts.
First, avoid over-hyping your product. Second, don’t over-sell your streaming capabilities. Third, make sure your content is the’moment’ you’re referring to.
Finally, consider your audience. Do they want the same kind of news? Are they more interested in entertainment than in a breaking story? Does their preferred style of television fit with what they see on your platform? If they’re commercial-averse, maybe they don’t want to pay for the channel, or you can offer them a lower cost version.
Streaming is likely to reshape how we get our political news. Not only will online video streaming eliminate the limitations imposed by a cable company’s licensing, but it will also allow new players to enter the fray.
