Generally, when a breaking news story occurs that is of national interest and warrants the interruption of regular programming (or in some cases, even the interruption of a live television or radio network’s ongoing newscast), the network will alert its affiliates to “stand by” for the report. The network feed will then pause for a short period of time, and the station imaging will be replaced by a graphic with a unique music cue, indicating that the program is now breaking news. The report may last only a few minutes, or it could continue for hours or even days. In such cases, the network will usually integrate analysis about the event through analysts in-studio or via phone, satellite or broadband. Other terms for this type of news coverage include Newsflash, Special Report and Breaking News.
