Oftentimes, news programs are interrupted by breaking news. This type of interruption may happen during a live newscast or during an overnight newscast. The interruption may last from a few seconds to a few minutes. In some cases, the network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor. In other cases, the station may cut away to a video of the story.
Oftentimes, a breaking news interrupt will only be used when there is a story of high importance to the viewer. In other cases, the story may be a soft news story. In such cases, the network may integrate an analysis of the story into the newscast.
Breaking news can be used when there is a local event that requires a reporter to be on site. This information is usually disseminated through an internal alert service. The reporter may also share additional information as the news breaks. In addition, news reports may last from a few minutes to several hours.
Networks are careful about relaying breaking news during play-by-play broadcasts of professional sports. In addition, they may schedule preemptions for certain events that take place weeks in advance. For example, in April 2017, ABC’s Scandal was interrupted by a missile strike.
The breaking news graphic on the network may include music or other elements to draw attention to the importance of the news. The network may also change the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency. In some cases, the network will roll the graphic again after the coverage has been reset.
