Current News is a term that is used to describe a news story or event that has recently occurred. It is also sometimes referred to as breaking news, late-breaking news or special report, and often refers to the most significant story of the moment.

Breaking news usually occurs when an event warrants a programming interruption to tell its details. It can be a political crisis, natural disaster or other calamity.

The coverage may take the form of a live newscast, with a camera following a reporter at the scene of the incident and reporting on what they see. It can also be a pre-recorded or taped story that is relayed through phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means.

A broadcast of a breaking news story or event typically begins with an opening graphic, music and a voiceover that announces the start of the coverage. It is followed by the announcing of a news anchor and introduction to the story at hand.

Depending on the nature of the story, it can be covered for hours or days at a time. It can involve the most immediate and potentially serious event, such as a terrorist attack or an emergency weather event, or it can be less severe but of greater impact, such as the discovery of new species or the death of an important figure.

When the news event is over, it is usually announced by a network or local station that it has ended, and the information will be disseminated through an internal alert service. The anchor will usually remind viewers that there is more information on their local news that day or a full wrap-up on the network’s evening or morning newscast (if applicable).
