Trending is a breaking news story that has become popular on social media and other forms of media. When a trending story is trending, it is usually highlighted on all platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The story is highlighted in a manner that shows the rise and fall of the trend over time, and also includes the number of times it has been seen and shared. A special trending news report can also be aired on regular TV, radio, or online. Historically, these types of interruptions, known as newsflashes or “special report” (and in some cases, alert crawls during non-news programming) were reserved for extremely urgent breaking events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and forced multiple stations to interrupt their programming to air the news.
