Trending is the section of Current News that talks about what’s happening right now, which is why it is often referred to as “the pulse of the country.” If an event elicits nationwide coverage that requires numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming (or even their national network newscast), the broadcaster will alert affiliates, and typically run a countdown sequence until the special report begins. This will usually include a special graphic overlay and distinctive music cues, as well as altered lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency. Occasionally, this report may last for hours or even days.
