Trending is a breaking news segment on television and radio programs that discusses current topics of interest. It is usually a live report, but may also be a recorded update. In the United States, a network will often first announce that it will interrupt its regular non-news programming for a special report, and will ask its affiliates to stand by. This is typically followed by a countdown sequence, to give stations time to switch to the national feed. The report may last for a few minutes, or several hours and days, depending on the subject matter being covered. Other names include Newsflash, Breaking news and Special Report.
