Breaking news is a report on an event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, for national networks, regularly scheduled newscasts). When an event occurs that requires immediate coverage, a station or network will often alert its affiliate stations to “stand by” as the network feed is about to be interrupted. The interruption is signaled by a countdown graphic, and then the newscast or special report begins. Some broadcasters also use special graphics and music cues to convey the urgency of the story. The term was originally used for extremely urgent events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a major disaster, but it’s now common practice for 24-hour news channels to interrupt regular programming with breaking news reports.
