In April 2019, the FBI surrounded Jared Atkins house in a two hour stand-off because he had three stolen radioactive devices inside, which is enough to make a deadly dirty bomb. Atkins is now serving 15 years in federal prison. Now, the Government Accountability Office is saying people can too easily buy radioactive material. In a report exclusively obtained by NBC News, National Security officials told the GAO there is “increasing interest” among terrorists to get dirty bombs.

Breaking news, also known as late-breaking news, is a term used for a significant story occurring at a particular moment in time. It may be live or be a report that was published earlier, but was still considered newsworthy at the time. Breaking news may be used for any story of general interest, but is often used after another news organization has already covered the story. Another common term for breaking news is “Just In,” which refers to news that is breaking right now, but may not have been covered by another media outlet until much later.
Breaking news is a type of news that can be categorized into two types. On national network newscasts, the anchor announces the breaking news, which is the largest bold print on the centerfold. The headline is used to catch the attention of potential buyers. Meanwhile, trending news focuses more on the reader than the media, and can be anything from sports to pop culture. Stories that generate a ‘buzz’ tend to trend well, even if they have little impact on society.
Breaking news can interrupt local programming. For example, the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted ABC’s Scandal episode. In both Eastern and Central time zones, breaking news could interrupt primetime programming. During this time, it is likely to interrupt programs that are highly rated or have little time left to air. But if the news is truly important, local affiliates could interrupt a primetime program with an extended edition. This strategy is a useful way for local television stations to spread the word about breaking news and keep viewers informed.
