When a breaking news event occurs that warrants interruption of current non-news programming or even some regular network television and radio broadcasts, the station will typically notify its affiliates to “stand by”. This is followed by an announcement on-air from a news anchor that breaks the news in a countdown sequence, often overlaid with a distinctive newsflash graphic.
