Generally, “breaking news” refers to the news that is the most important story of the moment. This can be a local or international event. When the story breaks, a reporter may be sent to the scene of the event to get more information. The news is then relayed to the network’s affiliates. This process can take minutes or hours.
The earliest examples of breaking news are often quite sketchy. This was because of the limited amount of information available during the event. The best example is the coverage of the John F. Kennedy assassination in 1963. It reflected crude technology of the era.
The best breaking news coverage of the day usually takes place during commercial breaks. A network may have a live anchor available for the occasion. The local news station is typically given a cue from the network talent, or will join the network’s feed on an “extended edition.”
The shortest possible news report can last several minutes. In fact, the longest possible uninterrupted news story may last days. This is especially true during severe weather events. The same coverage can be seen during the September 11 attacks.
Occasionally, a network will incorporate analysis into its coverage of the story. When the event has ended, it will revert back to its regular programming. This is sometimes called a “reset.” The network may also opt to show a live shot of the anchor to show the audience that they are still on top of the story.
