About Current News
Trending is the name given to a breaking story that is rapidly gaining public interest. Normally, a network will interrupt non-news programming (or regular newscasts) with a breaking news report, called a “Newsflash”, or a “Special Report”. The report is usually introduced by a lower third that contains the story’s title and a distinctive music cue. Historically, such interruptions were used for national emergencies such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and severe weather events. Now, 24-hour news networks often interrupt regular commercial programming to report breaking stories. The news can then be followed by analysis through in-studio analysts, or a ticker that appears over other newscast graphics.
