Breaking news is a type of television and radio news coverage that focuses on breaking events. When an event is considered to be of sufficient importance, the network will interrupt current non-news programming with a special graphic, which is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. The network will also usually send a special alert to its affiliates, telling them to stand by for an interruption to their regular programs. The breaking news report may last only a few minutes or, depending on the severity of the event, may be interrupted for multiple hours and even days. Occasionally, a lower third ticker may be used instead of a full interruption to convey the message that the program is still on the air.
