Trending is the term used when an important news story dominates media coverage and is trending among online viewers. Trending stories may cause national network newscasts or local radio and television stations to interrupt regular non-news programming, such as sports or talk shows, and break into special live reports, often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. This interruption is usually called a “Newsflash” or “Special report”. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy were the exception, and only triggered extremely urgent news breaks that required network affiliates to interrupt their regular broadcasts with cut-ins or alert crawls during normal programming.
