If you’re looking for the latest news and information, the Bentley University Library’s current news guide can be of help. It lists articles published over the past year and lets you sort by the bolded column headings. You can also find news publications back two years using the “Archived News” tab. There are three ways to access breaking news and current events published by the Bentley University Library. The following is a sample of the various types of news publications that are available.
Breaking news during prime time is a problem because it interrupts new or highly-rated programming. It can also interrupt highly-rated programs that still have time to air. One recent example was the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike, which interrupted an episode of ABC’s Scandal. While the network was busy trying to recover from the broadcast, local affiliates were given the chance to break away and start their evening newscasts. The network’s talent then paused for a few seconds to “reset” their coverage. This may include rolling the opening graphic again. When the news is over, the local stations may join the network in a “second-shortening” or join it on a “special-edition.”
Breaking news and weather news are examples of events where programming interruptions are common. Earlier, news coverage of these events was limited to the most urgent or timely news. During the John F. Kennedy assassination, for example, the interruptions occurred only during the broadcast of the assassination. Walter Cronkite’s coverage was particularly noteworthy. Today, 24-hour news channels are increasingly common. When a major news event happens, coverage can last for hours, or even days.
