When a story develops that is of such urgency as to justify an interruption in current non-news programming (or, before the advent of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled network newscasts), it’s usually referred to as breaking news. The network’s feed will pause, and a special graphic and unique music cue are used to announce the news. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, these kinds of breaks were typically reserved for events requiring nationwide coverage and forcing numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
