Breaking news is a term used to describe the reporting of an urgent story. Until the advent of 24-hour television news channels, network affiliates were forced to interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (either on a local basis or nationally) for breaking news events such as natural disasters or the assassination of John F. Kennedy. This type of broadcast is sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash” or “Special report”. The break often begins with a distinctive graphic and music cue. In addition, lower thirds and other station imaging graphics may be altered to convey urgency. The break usually concludes with an anchor, presenting the story at hand.
