During a breaking news event, a local station may be prompted to break away from the network feed. The station will likely restart local programming after the coverage is over. If the event is important, a reporter may be present at the scene to report on the event.
A breaking news event may last a few minutes or it may last several hours. Networks may provide commentary or analysis of the story. They may also give local stations the opportunity to start evening newscasts.
One of the earliest breaking news events was the Kennedy assassination. CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite provided live coverage of the event. The coverage reflected the crude technology of the time.
Another major breaking news event was the September 11 attacks. These attacks occurred between September 11 and September 15, 2001. The coverage was sketchy because there was little information available at the time.
