When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a network will interrupt its regular programming, usually with a countdown sequence (also known as a Newsflash or Special Report) to allow affiliate stations to switch to the feed. A news anchor will then introduce the story at hand, if necessary over a graphic or music cue. Before 24-hour news networks became common, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, when multiple broadcasters interrupted their normal programming to cover the event. In recent years, some stations have begun using Special Report tickers during non-news programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
