Streaming has made video news ubiquitous. A recent study found that 85 percent of American households subscribe to at least one streaming service. This means viewers spend more time watching streaming programming than they do watching broadcast TV.
Major news networks have high hopes for streaming. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They have also created digital subchannels to provide an alternative outlet for programming.
A breaking news event can interrupt programming. In some cases, a national network newscast may pause to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. Other times, coverage may be passed to a reporter at the location of the breaking event.
When a breaking news story breaks, a news anchor introduces the story and may provide some background. The anchor may also remind viewers that more information will be covered on their local news. This may occur during an overnight newscast or the morning broadcast of a local news program.
If the coverage of a breaking news story lasts for a day or more, the network may decide to discontinue commercial advertising. The station will notify all affiliates. It will then switch to a reverse countdown. The network may also roll back the opening graphic to its previous position. The anchor may also change the lower thirds to indicate a sense of urgency.
Breaking news can also refer to a story that has been reported, but not yet aired. This may be referred to as a “special report.” When this occurs, the network may continue to provide a live shot of the anchor. It will also begin a new program or resume previous programming.
