During prime time, breaking news can interrupt a newscast or local television show. Depending on the length of the story, it may be a quick commercial break or it may be a full episode. Networks may also offer local stations the chance to break from the network feed to cover the story on their own.

One of the earliest “breaking news” interruptions was the John F. Kennedy assassination, which was covered by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite. The event was accompanied by an ear-catching graphic.

Unlike television news, radio stations are more cautious about relaying breaking news during play-by-play broadcasts of professional sports. They will often show an outro promo that directs viewers to the local station’s website or to a streaming news channel.

There are several online news services, all of which provide comprehensive and fast news. These services are often unbiased, and are fed by products of news agencies and journalistic craft. These sites also typically include links to local TV stations and newspapers.

A breaking news story may last several hours, and sometimes several days. During this time, the network may not be able to air regular commercial advertising. It may also be required to reschedule a program.

A good example of a breaking news story is the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike. This event interrupted a new episode of Scandal. At the point of interruption, Scandal was resumed.

There are many other examples of breaking news. However, many of them are sketchy.
