Before 24-hour news networks existed, when a major event happened that required nationwide coverage and caused programming interruptions at individual stations, broadcasters would alert their network affiliates to stand by and interrupt regular non-news programming with a special breaking news report (sometimes called Newsflash or Special Report) to cover the story. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics were also altered to convey the urgency of the news item.
