When a breaking news story occurs, and it is deemed sufficiently urgent to warrant interruption of current non-news programming (or in the case of a network newscast, the ongoing live broadcast), the television station will typically issue a “Newsflash” or “Special report” alert that indicates an upcoming break in regular coverage. At this point, the network feed pauses to allow any affiliates in progress to switch over to the network feed and begin reporting the developing story. During these breaks, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey an air of urgency. Historically, such breaking news reports were limited to major events that required national coverage requiring stations to interrupt their programming (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy). However, this practice has become increasingly common with 24-hour news networks that have anchors on-call for such events.
