Breaking news is a term used to refer to breaking events in the world of politics, culture, sports or otherwise that are of high importance or urgency and whose coverage requires interruption of other non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) for immediate reporting and/or analysis. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were usually reserved for major events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that would require multiple stations to interrupt their respective programs simultaneously for nationwide coverage. An announcement indicating that the network feed has been interrupted will then be provided, often overlaid on lower thirds and other graphics to add impact.
