Depending on the event, this may be brief or extensive and can last for minutes to hours or even days. In the past, such events as the assassination of John F. Kennedy would elicit nationwide coverage, and the network feed would be interrupted with a special graphic and music cue that alerted affiliate stations to “stand by”. In recent years, the use of special report tickers has reduced the need for cut-ins during regular programming.
