Trending is a section of Current News that talks about what is currently a hot topic of conversation. It can be based on popular culture, current events or politics.
Breaking News is a television or radio news report that interrupts regular non-news programming, usually during the time of an urgent event that warrants immediate attention (such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963). Before 24-hour news networks became common, such breaks were reserved for extremely serious events that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to stop their normal programming and interrupt regular commercial advertising. Breaking news reports are often accompanied by a special graphic and a distinctive music cue. Depending on the severity of the breaking news, network affiliates may also use a special ticker during regularly scheduled programming, reducing the need for cut-ins.
