If you want to learn about current events, you need to know what the terms “breaking news” and “current news” mean. Breaking news is a term used in the media to describe the most important story of the moment or a live story. It can also refer to a story of broad interest to viewers. Often used after a news organization has already reported on the story, breaking news is also often replaced by the phrase “Just In”.

For example, when a national network newscast begins to break a story, the news anchor will pause the newscast to allow the other networks in the feed to join the feed. The news anchor then introduces the story, using music to emphasize the news’ importance. The lower third will also be altered, depending on whether the story has a large impact on society. While this type of news is often not the most informative, it can help viewers to find out about the latest in the news.

Breaking news in prime time can be disruptive to other programming. Unlike breaking news during the day, current events can also interrupt highly rated shows with limited time to air. ABC’s April 2017 Scandal episode was interrupted by the Shayrat missile strike. Likewise, the show’s producers may not want to disturb viewers with pre-emptions during prime time. This is why local affiliates often get a break during the evening newscast.
