During a news event, a breaking news theme is often used to emphasize the importance of the story. It is usually used when there is a high degree of urgency or if the story is of broad interest to viewers.
The theme is often music-based. It may be an alarm or a sound reminiscent of an emergency. In order to convey a sense of urgency, the lower thirds may be altered. The opening graphic may also be altered.
The news report is typically brief and can last several minutes. This may be a result of limited information available at the time. A reporter may be dispatched to the scene of the breaking event to get additional details. When the coverage ends, the program may resume its normal programming schedule.
During a news event, a local station may be given the opportunity to break away from the network feed and broadcast its own newscast. This may be done as an extended edition or through video coverage. If the coverage is longer than a couple minutes, the station will likely switch back to the network feed.
The first reported instances of breaking news interrupting a local newscast were the events of the Kennedy assassination and the September 11 attacks. These events reflected the crude technology of the time.
In the case of the Kennedy assassination, CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite provided coverage. In addition, the coverage was brief and sketchy.
Another example of a breaking news interruption was ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike that interrupted the premiere of Scandal. NBC also provided coverage, but the episode was low-rated in the Eastern and Central time zones.
