About Trending
Breaking news is a segment of television or radio programming that interrupts non-news programing to report on events which have just occurred or are currently unfolding. In the United States, these are commonly known as “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. A breaking news story may also be accompanied by an audio crawl or a scrolling headline graphic. This graphic is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Depending on the severity of the event, it may be followed by the station’s regular commercial advertising, or may be sustained for hours or even days. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, break-ins were typically reserved for major events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, and severe weather events such as tornado warnings.
