Trending is a short news segment that talks about the latest trends on Twitter. It is usually found at the top of the hour during network broadcasts. It is also known as Newsflash or Special report. A breaking news event occurs when a newsworthy event elicits nationwide coverage that requires local or regional television and radio stations to interrupt their normal programming for an urgent news update. In the days before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were normally restricted to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
“Newsflash” and “Special report” are also used as synonyms for the same news event.
