Breaking News is a special segment that is added to a television or radio broadcast when an event warrants immediate, nationwide coverage and necessitates the interruption of normal non-news programming or regular, ongoing network newscasts. The network may alert its affiliated stations to “stand by” for the breaking news report, and may provide a countdown sequence on the top of the screen. Then the current newscast is paused, and a “Newsflash” or “Special report” opens with a distinctive graphic and music cue. These types of breaks are common on 24-hour news networks, and are often used to cover severe weather events that would otherwise elicit the use of cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programming.
