Whenever news occurs that is so significant it requires immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, at network affiliates, regularly scheduled newscasts), a breaking news alert is issued. Typically, the national network will interrupt regular programing with an onscreen graphic warning viewers to tune in for a special report. The alert may also be accompanied by a special music cue and lower thirds that are altered to convey urgency and importance. Breaking news updates are also sometimes used to provide ongoing coverage of severe weather events, particularly tornadoes and landfalling hurricanes. Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news networks, news breaks were often limited to major events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which necessitated a national newsflash and interrupted many television stations.
