Breaking news is a broadcasting term used to describe a news event of such importance that it warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming on a television or radio station, or a breaking live newscast on a 24-hour news channel. The report may last a few minutes, or it may be followed by ongoing coverage over several hours or even days. Often, an opening graphic and distinctive music cue are provided to signal that a special report is underway. Previously, such interruptions were reserved only for events of national importance such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
