When a breaking news story occurs that warrants interruption of regular non-news programming, or in some cases a network’s regularly scheduled newscast, a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” segment is often used to alert viewers. Such breaks are common at 24-hour news networks that have an anchor available to interrupt programming live as necessary. Typically, the break is preceded by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates time to switch over to the national feed. The news segment may then run for only a few minutes, or multiple hours or days as the situation requires.

Trending this week: a Utah jury convicts Kouri Richins for poisoning her husband; an investigation into the late labor leader Cesar Chavez reveals allegations of child abuse; and Iranian unmanned drones that cost only thousands to build are reshaping military conflict worldwide. Plus, we’ll explain how California’s high-speed rail project could fail if the state doesn’t get its act together.
