When a news event occurs that elicits widespread national coverage and warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, a special report or newsflash will typically be aired. In the past, breaking news events requiring interruption of programming on network and radio stations were usually restricted to severe weather events such as tornadoes or landfalling hurricanes. However, this practice became commonplace with the advent of 24-hour news networks. Breaking news reports can also be introduced using lower thirds, alert crawls or, prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, through the use of a cut-in, where station imaging and the program being interrupted is replaced by a network feed that includes the story.
