If an event occurs that warrants national news coverage, it may be necessary for a broadcaster to interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour news channel, to suspend the regular newscast entirely). In such cases, a breaking news “newsflash” or “special report” is used. In many cases, the breaking news story elicits analysis from news anchors in-studio or via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means. Newsflashes and special reports often use distinctive graphics, with a distinctive music cue or other opening elements to convey urgency. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics are sometimes altered to emphasize the importance of the report.
