As a result of the proliferation of streaming video, the news media landscape will soon be altered. This new landscape will include new overtly political operations and a multiplicity of choices that could help feed polarization in the audience.

Major news networks have high hopes for the streaming business. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build and operate their own streaming operations. And they believe they can capitalize on the audience’s willingness to pay for news. But they also want to avoid overhyping the product.

The cable news business has long been profitable. However, cable one-upped broadcast news by offering live events. In addition, viewers preferred entertainment over news.

Aside from repurposing programming from cable, the major streaming networks offer regular nightly news programs and news analysis. Some networks also offer reruns.

There are also free news streamers. These services provide the same quality of news as cable, but for free. Free streamers are trying to convince people to cut their cable subscriptions. Their goal is to get their share of the $3 billion that CNN, Fox, and MSNBC are estimated to generate in 2020.

Many people are turning to streaming to access news. It is a way to customize the experience. Not only does it allow for quick delivery, it also allows for archiving. For example, CBS News plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.

Streaming news has already proven to attract niche audiences. In fact, many viewers are spending more time watching streaming programming than they are watching broadcast TV.
