Current News is a daily series of articles and videos that highlight the latest developments in science, health, technology, and more. These stories are curated from a wide range of sources, including leading universities and scientific journals.
Breaking News
A breaking news or late-breaking news report is a special broadcast reporting on a story that has been deemed important enough to interrupt regular programming in order to report it. These reports may be brief, or they may be long-form news coverage (events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the September 11 attacks were primarily reported for days at a time).
Special Report
A special report is a breaking news report with a high level of specialized knowledge or analysis. These reports are anchored by news anchors or reporters who specialize in covering the subject, and can include background music or other specialized graphics.
On television, a breaking news report usually starts with a short countdown – often from 5 seconds – which alerts all network affiliate stations that there is an interruption of the programming in progress. A short graphic and voiceover announcing the cut-in is also displayed, as well as information disseminated from an internal alert/message service used by the station’s master control.
Upon the completion of the breaking news report, the network or local station will resume the programming in question. This is done by re-joining or starting back up the program in progress, depending on the duration of the story and whether or not the program was new to air, highly rated, or has enough time in its program slot to complete. During this time, sister stations and digital subchannels may provide an alternate outlet for pre-empted segments or full programming that was not aired due to the breaking news.
